Pedorthic clinics operate inside a much larger healthcare rehabilitation economy—one dominated by physiotherapy, chiropractic, and multidisciplinary clinic models. Within that broader landscape, independent pedorthic and chiropody clinics represent a relatively small niche, and the market is highly concentrated—with national platforms shaping expectations for patients, insurers, and the profession.
At the 2026 Pedorthic Association of Canada Symposium, Peter Wright, President of The Planning Group, will deliver the keynote plenary Strategic Growth for Pedorthic Clinics: Building Resilient Practices in a Changing Market. The session focuses on how clinic owners and leaders can strengthen business fundamentals without losing what matters clinically: quality, credibility, and patient outcomes.
A key pattern in the research is that consolidation and scale do not succeed simply by “adding more services.” Instead, the most resilient clinic platforms tend to win through standardization, repeatable operating models, and systems that reduce dependence on any one practitioner. Meanwhile, many independent clinics drift toward multidisciplinary complexity as a survival move—often without making explicit strategic choices about positioning, economics, and long term control.
The keynote will provide a practical clinic strategy framework built around five decisions that determine whether a practice can grow and remain viable:
One “quiet” issue the talk will also touch—briefly—is value capture. Because pedorthics is often reimbursed as a product category (orthotics) rather than a service category (assessment and treatment), the profession is structurally pushed to bundle expertise into the device price. In practice, this can train clinics (and patients) to undervalue professional judgment and leave revenue unrealized—unless leaders make deliberate decisions about pricing, operating discipline, and communicating value.
These same strategic pressures show up across the broader rehab sector, which is why The Planning Group’s clinic advisory work spans pedorthics and multidisciplinary rehabilitation practice environments (see our Rehab Clinics page).
